About

This is the continuing portfolio of Natalie Klett through the visuals and writings. Oil and acrylic painting, water colors, pen and ink, words and illustrations etc. I hope you like the weirder things in life.

Natalie Klett was born in in Phoenix, Arizona. She is a multimedia artist and combines landscape dreamscape paintings alongside found object sculptures and food and garden videos. Her artwork is a situational dialogue between the built environment and the human psyche. Along with having grown up doing her artwork in an all-artist family, Natalie studied environmental science, creative writing and art at the Johnston College in University of Redlands, California, as well as taking geography abroad at the University College London. Natalie has experimented with her thought patterns by studying at the American University of Paris for a summer of creative non-fiction writing, and as a non-degree graduate at Arizona State University to delve deeper into cultural and phenomenological ideas of geography.

She graduated with a MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia for multimedia studio arts, and attended the Fogo Island residency from PAFA summer of 2022.

She is currently a gardener and maker of things, writing and making with whatever she can get her hands on.

Statement

I am a desert dweller looking at the world from the future, a wild westerner looking at the compact grey ground in the city observing the changing the landscape in a multitude of perspectives. I am a situational artist utilizing location, psychogeography and questions of reality to create new narratives through juxtaposing worlds.

My current work explores the temporality of paper, plants and food with the longevity of plastics and infrastructural building materials. I am looking through the lens of Philadelphia, the city I am presently in compared to the west coast suburbs where I grew up. I am creating work that asks questions of built structures and their uses by oil painting flat cityscapes that juxtapose colorful reference photographs of memories and places, to making dollhouse sized greenhouses out of reclaimed cardboard and plastic bags that serve as an actual incubating site for seed sprouts. I am gardening on my own rooftop as a way to question the utopian ideals for the future of city planning.

I use the kitchen as my other studio where I am intrigued by what goes on inside the built structure with consumption and domesticity. I make this into my video work by creating edible sculptures, such as planets out of cake, and pasta sculptures with homegrown vegetables, serving the concept of culinary arts and class differences by documenting myself with the food or behind the camera. I am world building with garbage, recreating science-fiction like parallels with plants and the future of civilization, a body of desert looking at the rest of the green earth in bemusement.
